Dear Yuletide writer


This is my first time doing Yuletide, and I'm really excited to be participating. I'm especially happy to be getting fic in these fandoms- they deserve so much more attention than they get, so I'm glad you've volunteered to write for them!

I mainly read romance- I like to see fanfic that expands on the relationships in canon, and the feelings of the characters. For instance . . .

Brick (Brendan/Laura)

Brendan/Laura is probably one of the most interesting relationships in the movie. What does she really feel for him, or he for her? Where does the manipulation stop and the feelings begin? It's so twisted angsty that it's hard not to be fascinated by them. I'm uncomfortable with noncon, but other than that, I'll happily read anything about them.

Sevenwaters (Niamh, Niamh/Ciaran, Johnny/Gareth)

I'm a bit of an anomaly in this fandom- the character that everyone loves (Liadan) is my least favourite, and the one I feel the most sympathy for is Niamh. The poor girl is cast out by her family, sent away to an abusive husband, and forced to live in her own personal hell. Even after Ciaran rescues her, she doesn't get a happy ending, thanks to Oonagh. I want to see a sympathetic look at Niamh- instead of the standard dismissal of her as an airhead, I really want to see her thoughts and dreams. I'd like to see her relationships with Ciaran and Fainne, but it's okay if that's just background- she's the one I'm most interested in.

I listed Johnny and Gareth as well, because I'm really curious about them. I was thrilled to see a gay couple in the series, but since the book was from Clodagh's POV, we didn't get to see things through their eyes. How did they get together? Were they frightened by their feelings for one another? How did their relationship affect the the community on Inis Eala. I'm not looking for angst, but it'd be nice to see their relationship develop.

Rome (Niobe, Vorena the Elder, Vorena the Younger)

Niobe was my favourite character from the moment she appeared onscreen, and I couldn't help but pity her. Even though the series' is mostly seen from the eyes of the male characters (at least in terms of the lower classes) I looked at it through her eyes- being chained to a man you barely know, being subjected to marital rape, fearing for your life- and the lives of your children- over one terible mistake. Even though fandom in general either ignores her or derides her for the affair, she was the character I felt the most for. (I'm not too fond of Vorenus- Kevin McKidd did a great job, but his actions infuriate me.) Niobe and her daughters are all brilliant, strong women, and I want to see them celebrated.

(Non-con squicks me in general, but I understand if it's used here- the show does, after all, make it fairly explicit that Roman wives didn't have the option of saying "no.")

Perfect Creature (Silus/Lilly, Edgar)

This is hands-down my favourite movie. I adore the plot, the atmosphere, and especially the characters. I loved Silus's journey to discovering the Brotherhood's corruption and Lilly's reconnecting to someone after losing her family. And of course, I love Edgar and his psychosis. I'll accept pretty much anything about the three main characters, but I especially love fic about Lilly and Silus and their relationship.
